You go to the gym regularly and are only seeing minor fitness gains.  You are dedicated to working out and ready to take your workout to the next level.  The one thing that separates a good workout from a great workout is all in your head.  Your mind is your most powerful tool.  All you need are a few mental tricks to take your workout to the next level.

7 Mental Tricks to Take Your Workout to the Next Level

1. Set an Intention

At the beginning of your workout select a word or phrase to focus on. Try ‘I am strong’ or ‘I am a fighter’. Repeat it to yourself and come back to it as often as possible during your workout. Focus on this intention as the why behind your workout.

2. Visualize

Visualization primes your muscles and your mind for the task ahead. Visualize yourself completing your workout strong. Powering through that last set, moving a heavy weight with ease.

3. Divide and Conquer

Break your workout down into mini goals. If your goal is to run 3 miles, look at it as running 1 mile 3 times. It is much easier to commit to running one mile.

4. Have a Purpose

Take your workout to the next level by having purpose or a goal behind each workout. Your goal could be to deadlift your body weight, manage your anxiety, or fit into your skinny jeans. Having a purpose takes your workouts from simply working out to training to reach your goal.

5. Focus

While performing a lift, focus on the muscle you are targeting. This is will help activate the muscle and keep your form correct.

6. Embrace the Good Pain

When you feel the good pain (associated with hard work not injury), recognize the pain as pushing yourself to a new level. Embrace the pain and remind yourself this is the feeling of getting stronger.

7. Congratulate Yourself

When you kill it at the gym and push out those last few reps with perfect form, be sure to take a moment to recognize your greatness.  A job well done deserves congratulations.
